External Support
The Psychology Department encourages grads to obtain outside funding. Receiving an outside scholarship or fellowship is a great benefit to your career both while in graduate school and after graduation. Visit our list of grant opportunities or GEPA for possible funding opportunities. You may also speak with your Fund Manager for information about applying for extramural funds, or to our Extramural Funds Officer. We encourage all graduate students to apply for fellowships and scholarships; every such award reduces the financial burden on the department and makes it easier for us to honor our commitment to all students.
The base support level for 1st - 5th year grads is $30,000 (provided they maintain good academic standing and have a record of successful past TA performance). For 1st years grads, this support ordinarily comes in the form of 1 TAship and 2 quarters of stipend/tuition support. For 2nd-4th year grads, this support ordinarily comes in the form of 2 TAships, 1 Associate (in lieu of TA) position and a small stipend. For 5th year grads, this support ordinarily comes in the form of 3 TAships.
A grad who receives outside funding will receive 100% of their external award plus our $30,000 support package, if allowed by the fellowship. If the fellowship award specifically disallows TA effort, work, or service, the amount of department support will be correspondingly limited. *NSF GRFP's usually allow grads to TA (with approved exceptions) based on the department's requirement to TA 4 quarters. Please contact your grant administrator and the graduate coordinator for details pertaining to specific awards.
GSRs Paid on Ladder Rank Faculty and Adjunct Grants
Full year GSRships through faculty replace departmental support. Those students who are supported as GSRs for the full year may defer their TAship to another year, but would still have to complete their 4 required TAships before graduation.
