New Students

Dear New Freshman,

Welcome to UC San Diego and the Department of Psychology!  We are thrilled that you will be joining us for the 2018-19 school year!  As a Psychology student here at UC San Diego, you will have access to some of the foremost Experimental Psychology faculty in the world, and the opportunity to learn from and work with them to conduct cutting-edge research.

We know that academics will be of the utmost importance to you, and we want you to succeed.  As a new Freshman, we suggest that you take Lower Division classes in preparation for your Psychology major and General Education requirements.  Wherever possible, we encourage you to take classes that overlap to fulfill both requirements for your major and requirements for your college (for example, if your college requires you to take 1 Biology, 1 Chemistry, and 1 Physics class, we suggest that you choose classes from the Psychology major pages).  During your first quarter here at UC San Diego, you should take Math and/or Natural Science classes, but we strongly discourage students from enrolling in PSYC 60 (or another Statistics class) during the first quarter of their Freshman year at UC San Diego.  You may not enroll in Upper Division Psychology classes during your first year.  Keep in mind that college is very different than high school, and it is normal to have an adjustment period.

We want you to feel prepared for your academic career here at UC San Diego, so we have compiled some resources to help you get started.  We will also be offering two New Student Orientation Sessions in the Fall and hope that you will join us!
